To practice looking closely. To develop an awareness of the natural world; “a crisp, tingling clarity of perception” (van Matre, 1974, p. 17). To recognize that when we do start looking particularly we can often discover the most amazing things and places.

Materials: Paint samples
Overview: Using a variety of colourful paint or counter samples (from a hardware store), students are challenged to find items in the forest that closely match these colours. Although students will gravitate to green and brown chips, once these colours are matched, many will be keen to challenge themselves by attempting to match more unique colours which they generally might not expect to find in the forest (e.g. bright reds, oranges, dark blues). In particular, students are often excited to share what others’ are able to find to match the ‘tough’ colours. a dozen touchesMaterials: Egg cartons
