Grade 6/7 Outdoor EducationThe Outdoor Leadership and Pursuits Elective is taught as two separate modules, “A” and “B”. Module “A” will focus on introducing students to a variety of seasonally focused outdoor activities and developing their skills as outdoor enthusiasts and future leaders. Module “B” is only open to students who have previously taken Module "A".
Semester 1: Fall 'A' ModuleCycling Skills, canoeing/kayaking, and navigation skills will be explored during the Fall “A” Module. Trip planning, gear selection, gear repair, bicycle maintenance and safety considerations related to these activities will also be addressed. This module will involve a variety of activities both on and off campus with a number of half and full day field trips. The only prerequisites are having a positive attitude and showing a willingness to try new and exciting outdoor activities. In this semester students will need a bike.
Semester 2: Winter 'A' ModuleCross-country skiing skills, rock climbing, and navigation skills will be explored during the Fall “A” Module. Trip planning, gear selection, gear repair, cross-country ski maintenance and safety considerations related to these activities will also be addressed. This module will involve a variety of activities both on and off campus with a number of half and full day field trips. The only prerequisites are having a positive attitude and showing a willingness to try new and exciting outdoor activities.
Semester 3: Spring 'B' ModuleThe goal of the Spring Module is to prepare students for an overnight backpacking trip in June. Students will develop all the skills required to participate in this exciting excursion including: trip planning, navigation and GPS, gear selection, packing, menu planning, use of camp stoves, tent set-up, fire building, wildlife safety and basic first aid skills. Student who sign up for this elective must own sturdy hiking boots and acquire or rent an overnight backpack (50-70 Liters) and a light weight sleeping bag rated to at least (-5°C). It is also expected that all students who sign up for this elective will work hard to develop their outdoor skills and are committed to participating on the overnight backpacking trip.

Grade 8/9 Outdoor EducationThe Outdoor Leadership and Pursuits Elective will be taught as two separate modules, “A” and “B”. Module “A” will focus on introducing students to a sustainable back-country travel and will culminate in a one-night overnight excursion. Module "B" involves preparation for a multi-day overnight excursion and is only open to students who have previously taken Module "A".
Semester 1: Fall 'A' ModuleThe development of outstanding leadership and teamwork is a priority for this course along with an introduction to minimal impact travel and living in a natural environment. Specific activities will include team-building and outdoor initiatives, trip planning and gear selection, fire building and outdoor cooking, shelter building, hiking and orienteering. Participation is required in one overnight hiking excursion for which students will be 100% responsible for planning, cooking and transporting personal gear.
Semester 2: Winter 'A' ModuleThe development of outstanding leadership and teamwork is a priority for this course along with an introduction to minimal impact travel and living in a natural environment. Specific activities will include team-building, trip planning and gear selection, fire building and outdoor cooking, shelter building, cross-country skiing and back-packing. Participation is expected in one overnight cross-country skiing excursion for which students will be 100% responsible for planning, cooking and transporting personal gear.
Semester 3: Spring 'B' ModuleThis course is limited to students who have participated in Outdoor Ed "A" modules in fall or winter of this year. Focus will be on the continued consolidation and refinement of leadership and teamwork skills along with the development of more advanced travel back-country in a natural environment. This elective will include an early day trip geared toward team building and an end of semester multi-day back-country expedition that students will work toward planning for and participating in. Interested students should be prepared to commit to a physically and mentally demanding but rewarding learning experience. Students should also be prepared to put in necessary work in all core classes in order to be eligible for multiple days out of the classroom.
